How to Use a Generator Changeover Switch During a Power Outage

If your property has a generator changeover switch installed, it can be a reliable way to keep essential power running during an outage. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to using it safely.

Using Your Changeover Switch

  • Locate the changeover switch on your switchboard (there is usually only one)
  • Switch it from position I all the way to position II
  • Find the switch labelled Generator CB and turn it on if it isn’t already
  • Plug in and start your generator
  • Once power is restored, usually shown by your Ergon meter display coming back on, turn the generator off and return the changeover switch to its original position (I)

A Few Safety Tips

  • Only operate a changeover switch you’ve been shown how to use, or that was installed by a licensed electrician
  • Never run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space
  • If you’re ever unsure which switch is which, or power doesn’t return as expected, stop and call a licensed electrician
  • Regular servicing of your switchboard and generator setup helps make sure everything works when you need it
